PROCEDURE - CREATING COVER ART

 
A typical approach to creating unique cover art is basically as follows:

For portraiture, the client submits a sharp, detailed (professional or non-professional) photo, from which I work directly. This photo represents the exact position, angle, etc. of the subject/face since this will become the basis for the final depiction, regardless of medium, style, etc.

If the cover art is not based on portraiture, then I create a series of composition sketches for the client from which we can fine tune and discuss any other ideas that may come up as a result.

Also during this time, I discuss thoroughly with the client what they would like to achieve with their cover art. I go for key words to describe a look or feel. We also determine what sort of mediums will be used (i.e. acrylics, watercolors, pen & ink) and what kind of style best suits (i.e. abstract, animated, realist). During this stage of the process, color schemes, embellishments, backgrounds, etc. are discussed as well. Many times, we look through my website portfolio together to point out specific details or overall effects, or clients are also welcome to send images or ideas from other sources that can be incorporated into the artwork.
